"For the healing of the world"

Participants: Some 379 delegates from member churches gathered, with a team of 500 Canadian volunteers.

Highlights: Bishop Mark S. Hanson of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America was elected LWF president and Rev. Dr Ishmael Noko became General Secretary. Some Assembly delegates were denied visas to Canada, which became a major issue. Bishop Dr Margot Kaessmann from Germany delivered the keynote address. The message of this Assembly was composed of the focus: the healing gift of justification, the healing gift of communion, the healing of divisions within the One Church, the mission of the Church in multi-faith contexts, removing barriers that exclude, the Church’s ministry of healing, justice and healing in families, overcoming violence, transforming economic globalization, and of healing creation.
